Turning Data into the “Why” of Learning

Our last 2 articles talked about the importance of Education and the connections that exist within a program and with a student. Each student creates a “data footprint” as they walk through, and interact with information that institutions provide for them. Traditionally, this data has been measured in competencies, objectives, outcomes, assessments, and rubrics.
Curriculum Developers spend enormous amounts of time curating content for programs. There’s no doubt that the content will satisfy the requirements of the program. However:
- Will this content help keep a student engaged in the course, in the program, in the school?
- Does that content promote or stifle a students’ appetite for learning and expanding?
- Of all the content that could be used, why is this one “better” than the other?
- How do we know if this is positively impacting our student?
When it comes to student engagement, it’s more than just objectives and outcomes, “1’s and 0’s”. The secret to engagement lies in being able to translate those bits and bytes, into something that can explain the how, what, where, and, most importantly, “the why” of our students.
Though it’s true that all this data that’s collected can be overwhelming and at times, seem disconnected. There are connections and patterns within them that hold the key to keep students engaged and the door open to a future of changes that will make a Program more engaging.
Understanding what keeps students engaged is what will make the difference between simply collecting “1’s and 0’s” on students and turning that data into information that is truly actionable.
